Fair Labor Standards Act-

Youth Employment

The objective of this eLearning project was to design an immersive scenario-based refresher course for managers who require a comprehensive understanding of the Fair Labor Standards Act for Youth Employment.

Audience: Managers who employ youth ages 14-17

Responsibilities: Instructional design, eLearning development, action mapping, storyboarding

Tools Used: Articulate Storyline 360, Adobe XD, Canva

The Problem: Due to the higher than usual volume of customers, Sunrise Cafe decided to hire new employees. Many youth around the area were interested in employment so it was important for management to brush up on the FSLA for Youth Employment. This will help them fairly and legally employ minors.

The Solution:  After reviewing the FSLA for Youth Employment with the client, I determined there were many different regulations based on specific age. To ensure management is well versed in the FSLA, I proposed an immersive scenario-based refresher course relevant to the tasks around the cafe.

The Process

My client furnished me with the learning outcomes they sought and requested an evaluation which demonstrated the learners' proficiency. We worked together to narrow down tasks that were relevant to the cafe. With the learning outcomes as my guide, I devised a visual representation of the project's key concepts. Subsequently, I formulated questions for the evaluation that emphasized the crucial takeaways for the learners.

Action Map

The action map proved to be a crucial tool in highlighting the laws governing non-agricultural jobs for individuals between the ages of 14-15 and 16-17. Given the nuanced differences in laws between these two age categories, it was essential to have a comprehensive understanding of the laws applicable to each. Utilizing the action map enabled me to effectively organize the input provided by the SMEs and clearly outline our objectives for the course.

Visual Mockup

The subsequent phase involved conducting an investigation into prevalent color palettes employed by coffee shops. Based on my findings, I determined that adhering to a designated color scheme, font, and text style is essential in order to achieve a consistent and aesthetically pleasing appearance for the course.

Upon finalizing the style guide, I proceeded to utilize Adobe XD in order to design a distinctive slide for each scenario presented within the course. This comprehensive approach entailed the creation of a diverse set of slides, including an introduction slide, a user assistance slide, and slides featuring distinct consequences for both correct and incorrect responses.

As part of an ongoing effort to achieve optimal quality, I meticulously revised each slide, ensuring that all visual and instructional elements were seamlessly integrated in a manner that culminated in a cohesive and intuitive learning experience for the user.
